The fluorescent lights in the seventh-floor conference room hum like a dying frequency. Deputy Director Morrison slides a manila folder across the table. Inside: a single photograph of a woman with sharp cheekbones and darker, harder eyes. Cyrillic text on the back. A name.
Katya Volkov. GRU signals intelligence. Currently stationed at the Soviet Embassy, East Berlin.
"She wants to come over," Morrison says, lighting a cigarette he doesn't offer to share. "Made contact through a cutout in Vienna three weeks ago. Says she has the name of a mole — someone inside Western intelligence. Could be MI6. Could be us."
He lets that sit.
"Your handler in Berlin will be Frank Calloway. Station chief. Fifteen years in the field, solid record. He'll run the operation on the ground."
