FAQ

What is StorySplice?

StorySplice is a visual editor for creating branching interactive fiction — the kind of stories where readers make choices that shape the narrative, sometimes called choose-your-own-adventure stories. You build your story as a visual map of connected scenes, where each scene can lead to multiple reader choices. The editor lets you drag, zoom, and rearrange scenes so you can see every path and ending at a glance. Once your story is ready, you publish it with a single click and share a link that anyone can play in their browser. StorySplice is free to use, runs entirely in the browser with no installation required, and works on desktop and mobile devices. It is built for fiction writers, game designers, educators, and anyone who wants to explore branching storytelling.

How does the story map work?

The story map is a visual canvas where each card represents a scene in your story — a passage of text that the reader sees. Colored lines between cards represent choices — the options a reader picks to move from one scene to the next. Cards with a green border are the starting scene of your story, and cards with dashed borders mark endings. You interact with the map by clicking a card to open the editor and write its content, right-clicking for a context menu with options like branch, expand, and delete, or clicking a connecting line to edit the choice text or change where it leads. You can drag cards to rearrange the layout, scroll to zoom in and out, and drag the background to pan across your story. The map updates in real time as you add scenes and choices, giving you a bird's-eye view of your entire narrative structure.

What counts as an AI call?

An AI call is any action where StorySplice sends a request to an AI writing model on your behalf. Each individual Write, Rewrite, Continue, Custom instruction, or Suggest Choices action counts as 1 AI call. Larger structural actions also count as 1 call each: Outline generation (creating a story skeleton from a premise), Expand with AI (extending a dead-end into a chain of 2 to 5 connected scenes), Branch Wizard (generating multiple diverging paths from a single scene), Splinter (converting linear text into a branching structure), and Smooth (rewriting a scene for consistency with surrounding context). The Quick Write feature, which writes content for multiple empty nodes at once, fires one AI call per node in your outline — so an outline with 12 nodes would use 12 calls. Manual editing, reading, publishing, and all other non-AI features do not count against your limit.

How many AI calls do I get?

StorySplice offers two tiers of AI usage. Free users get 10 AI calls per day, which is enough to try every feature — an outline generation, a few writes, and a rewrite or two. It is a great way to explore the tool and start a story. Pro users get 200 AI calls per day, which supports creating multiple full-length stories in a single session, extensive rewriting and polishing, or experimenting with different AI models and approaches throughout the day. Both limits reset at midnight UTC each day. If you find yourself hitting the Free limit regularly, Pro gives you the headroom to iterate without worrying about running out of calls mid-session.

What happens when I hit the limit?

When you reach your daily AI call limit, StorySplice displays a notification letting you know. Your work in progress is always saved — you never lose anything when the limit is reached. You can still do everything that does not require AI: edit scene text manually, rearrange your story map, add or remove choices, read and play stories, publish or unpublish, export your work, and browse the community library. The only actions that are paused are AI-powered ones like Write, Rewrite, Expand, Branch Wizard, and Splinter. Your limit resets automatically at midnight UTC, so you can pick up right where you left off the next day. If you find yourself regularly hitting the Free limit, upgrading to Pro increases your daily allowance to 200 calls.

Which writing model should I pick?

Free users write with Kimi K2.5, a fast model that produces strong prose quality with natural-sounding dialogue and descriptions. Pro users can also choose from Gemini Flash (a balanced option from Google) and GLM 4.7 Flash (a different stylistic flavor for variety in tone). Your model choice is saved automatically in your browser and applies to all writing actions (Write, Rewrite, Continue, and Custom instructions). Structural actions like Outline generation and Expand with AI always use Gemini Pro internally, regardless of your selected writing model, because these tasks benefit from a model optimized for planning and structure rather than prose style.

What is the difference between Expand and Branch?

Expand with AI adds depth to your story — it takes a single choice that currently leads nowhere (a dead end) and extends it into a chain of 2 to 5 new connected scenes, creating a longer narrative path for the reader to follow. Use Expand when you have a choice that exists but needs a story thread behind it. Branch Wizard adds breadth — it takes a single scene and generates multiple new diverging choices from it, each leading to a new scene with its own content. Use Branch Wizard when you want a scene to fork into several different paths at once, giving readers more options at a decision point. Both features support full undo, so you can experiment freely and revert if the AI-generated content does not match your vision.

What is Splinter?

Splinter is StorySplice's signature feature for turning existing linear writing into interactive fiction. You paste a linear narrative — a short story, a chapter, an essay, or any prose — and the AI analyzes your text to find natural branch points: moments where a character makes a decision, a situation could go differently, or the narrative could plausibly diverge. It then generates a complete branching story structure from your original prose, preserving your voice and style while creating new paths and outcomes. Splinter is the fastest way to convert existing writing into an interactive experience. It works best with narratives between 500 and 3,000 words that contain clear character decisions or turning points. After Splinter generates the structure, you can edit, expand, or rearrange any part of the result in the visual editor.

Is my writing private?

Yes — stories on StorySplice are private by default and remain private until you explicitly choose to publish them. Unpublished stories are only visible to you when you are signed in. When you use AI features, your story context is sent to AI models via OpenRouter for processing, but your text is not stored by the AI provider and is not used for model training. OpenRouter acts as a routing layer and does not retain prompt data after the response is generated. Published stories are publicly accessible via their share link and appear in the community library, but you can unpublish at any time to make them private again. You can also share unpublished drafts with specific people using the draft sharing feature, which generates a temporary link that does not appear in the public library.

How do I publish my story?

Publishing on StorySplice is a one-click process. From your library, find the story you want to share and click the Publish button. StorySplice will validate your story first — checking for issues like orphan scenes that readers cannot reach, broken links, or missing choice text — and let you know if anything needs fixing. Once published, your story gets a unique shareable URL (like storysplice.app/s/your-story-id) that anyone can visit to play through your branching narrative, no account required. Published stories also appear in the community library where other users can discover and play them. You can also Publish Unlisted — your story gets a shareable link and is playable by anyone with the URL, but it does not appear in the community library. This is useful for sharing with a specific audience or for testing. You can unpublish at any time with a single click, which immediately removes the story from public access.

How much does StorySplice cost?

StorySplice is free to use with no restrictions on reading, creating, editing, or publishing stories. Free accounts include 10 AI calls per day, access to the full visual editor with undo and redo, draft sharing for feedback, Twine/Twee import, and all community library features. Pro costs $6 per month or $48 per year (a 33% savings with the annual plan) and includes 200 AI calls per day, your choice of AI writing model, Twine/Twee export, and reader analytics that show you which paths readers choose and where they drop off. Both plans include unlimited story creation and publishing. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time through the billing portal powered by Stripe, and your stories remain yours regardless of your subscription status.
